Laundry Room Maintenance That Prevents Most Repairs
The monthly and yearly checks that keep washers and dryers out of the repair queue.
Dryer: airflow first
Clean the lint filter every load. Once a year, disconnect the vent and clear the duct, and check the exterior hood flap opens freely. Restricted airflow overheats the dryer and shortens the life of the thermal fuse and heating element.
Washer: filters and hoses
Clean the drain pump filter monthly on front-loaders. Inspect inlet hoses for bulges and replace rubber hoses with braided stainless after five years. Shut the water valves off when you leave for an extended trip.
Level and load
A machine that walks is usually unlevel or overloaded. Adjust the feet, redistribute large items, and avoid washing a single heavy blanket without other items to balance the drum.
Keep the door open
Front-load washers grow mould when the door stays shut. Leave the door and detergent drawer open between loads and wipe the boot dry.
